“Were they ashamed because of the abomination they have done? They were not even ashamed at all; They did not even know how to blush…” (Jer. 6:15)
These words were used to describe the people of Judah, specifically in her capital, Jerusalem. Destruction was certain for this city, and this verse gives us a key indicator as to why. These people were comfortable with their sin. They were so comfortable with it that their sinful actions and the sinful actions of others no longer caused them to “blush.” They had become so comfortable with sin that their actions no longer caused them to feel guilty for what they had done. They were no longer ashamed. Sin was a normal part of their everyday lives.
As we reflect on such a sad condition, may all of us ask ourselves questions like these… Does sin cause us to blush? Do the curse words in our music or the inappropriate scenes in the movies we watch make us feel uncomfortable? Am I okay with lying and deceit? Is my conscience affected if I choose to use and abuse the name of God with all vanity and irreverence? Am I comfortable with laughing and joking around when we are assembled, when I am supposed to be worshiping God with an attitude of awe and reverence?
Does sin make us blush……? It should. If not, we are headed for destruction just like God’s people of old. May we never become comfortable with the sins of man, which put the Son of God upon the cross of Calvary. Jesus was murdered because man sinned and needed a savior. May we never approve of actions that created this need. If we are comfortable with sin, it’s time to get out of our comfort zone. We need to clean out our music, our movies, our mouths, and our minds. May sin always cause us to blush, that we might get as far away from it as possible.
