When you think about interesting characters found in the pages of scripture, the queen of Sheba makes my list. While there are many things we do not know about the woman (including her name), there are a great number of lessons we can learn from her example. 1 Kings 10:1 says, “Now when the queen of Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the Lord, she came to test him with difficult questions.” (NASB 95) Just one verse tells us so much about this woman! First, she was a critical thinker. This woman had heard of Solomon and the wisdom given to him by Jehovah God. Upon hearing of this wisdom, she did not automatically accept the speech of others as true. She wanted to go right to the king himself and ask him some “difficult questions.” She wanted to test Solomon to see if the rumors were true. What a lesson for us! We live in a world where people say a lot about a lot of different things. If you want to know what’s true and what’s false, go to the source. More specifically, if you want to know what the will of God is and what His will is not, go to His Word. Our mindset as to what is right and what is wrong should be based solely on what God says in His Word, nowhere else… Secondly, the Queen of Sheba was willing to travel roughly 1,500 miles to discover the truth. While the exact distance spurs a lot of debate, this was a LONG journey. Due to the weight of the truth concerning the fame of Solomon, she went a great distance to discover it for herself. How far will you go to discover the truths of God’s Word? The weight of the truth is eternal glory, and the consequence is eternal separation from God… Like the queen of Sheba, may we all be willing to go as far as we must to learn the truth from the source of the truth. May we all be willing to go the distance in our study of God’s Word to find that which is true.
