Life is journey full of twists and turns and it’s easy to get lost. Challenging questions about life and death, tragedy, morality, right-living, and many other things often confront us. Left to our own devices, these questions are impossible to answer satisfactorily. Like a ship at sea needs a lighthouse, you and I need the light of God’s Word to light the way, and bring clarity and direction to life.
The psalmist said, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path” (Ps. 119:105). The Law of God enlightens our path (Ps. 19:8). It shows us how to live and how to make sense of life. God’s Word answers some of life’s most important questions.
First, God’s Word tells us how we got here. Evolutionists insist that the Universe and everything within it came into being as a result of millions of years of chance and chemical processes. But the evidence overwhelmingly points to the fact that God created everything. The Bible proclaims this truth vociferously. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Gen. 1:1). Gods world and Gods Word proclaim His existence so clear that to deny such is inexcusable (Ps. 19, Rom. 1:18-22).
Second, Gods Word tells us why we’re here. Solomon searched in every direction to find the meaning of life and ultimately found nothing but vanity and emptiness in everything life has to offer. He concludes his book by saying, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole of man” (Ecc. 12:13). The purpose of life is to glorify God. Outside of that, life has no real meaning.
Third, God’s Word tells us where we’re going. God did not make the earth to be our eternal home. One day it will be destroyed (2 Pet. 3:10) and we will go on to be with our Father in His house (John 14:1-3). We are citizens of Heaven (Phil. 3:21) and as such, our heart and eyes must always be focused there (Col. 3:1-4).
A broken lighthouse is of no help to ships at sea. But God’s Word will never be broken and it’s light will never be distinguished. May we alway look to Scripture to enlighten the paths of life.
