Bible memorization is a sticky subject for some. “I’m too old!” “It’s too difficult!” “My memory isn’t good!” “Is it really necessary?” These are just a few of the sentiments sometimes expressed about the subject. It can, admittedly, be an intimidating task, but it doesn’t have to be! Memorizing God’s Word will bless your life and greatly benefit your spiritual growth. And, it is something that everyone can do! Consider, briefly, some thoughts about the “why” and “how” of Bible memorization.
The benefits of committing God’s Word to memory are many. It will help us to avoid sin and resist temptation (Ps. 119:9, 11). It will build within our hearts a strong foundation to carry us through the difficult times (Ps. 1:1-3). And, it will help us to live a good and godly life (Josh. 1:8). Solomon said, “A Word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver” (Pro. 25:11). What great counsel can come from the mouth of the one who has memorized scripture and thus can speak of it to those who need counsel and guidance. Christian character will increase as our minds are renewed by the Word of God (Rom. 12:2). Chief of all, memorizing God’s Word will help us to know Him better (1 Sam. 3:21). The Lord has revealed Himself in His Word, and thus, the more we know His word, the better we know Him.
The methods of scripture memorization are also many. There are smart phone applications that will help, you may be able to put the verses to song, you could divide the verses in segments, write the passages out on paper, and emphasize certain words and phrases. You can purchase flash cards or make your own.You can memorize who sections of Scripture, or do it topically. But, whatever the method, it will involve time, dedication, and repetition. You must commit to doing it daily.
Make the decision today to dedicate God’s Word to memory. Doing so will bring about a great harvest of blessing and spiritual growth in your life.
