Tiny but Mighty (James 3:3-5)

Tiny but Mighty (James 3:3-5)

The tongue is one of the smaller yet stronger muscles in the human body. It is a muscle often described as “tiny but mighty.” Yes, from a physical standpoint, this is true… BUT this truth also applies to its Biblical application. To illustrate just how powerful the tongue is, James gives us three illustrations of objects in this world that are small but have a great impact and control. He uses the bridle to show how a small bit can control an extremely powerful horse. (James 3:3) He uses a rudder to show how a large ship is controlled by such a small piece of metal or wood on the boat. (James 3:4) He uses fire to show how such a small flame can conquer even a great forest. (James 3:5) There are small things in this life that are “tiny but mighty.” They have great power and control if we let them. The same can be said of our tongues. They are such a small part of our body, yet their impact can be one of great might. Are we using the might of our tongues for that which is good or evil? Are we building up or tearing down those around us? As we decide to use our tongues, we may all consider what the proverb’s writer said in Proverbs 16:24, “Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.”
