Pearls from Proverbs: Trust (Proverbs 3:5,6)

Who do you trust? That is a loaded question, and the answer often depends on the context in which it is asked. Yet one thing is certain: we all place our trust in someone. For some, it may be a spouse; for others, a close friend, a mentor, or even themselves. Trust is a powerful bond. It often takes years to build, yet it can be broken in a single moment. The book of Proverbs has much to say about trust, and we would be wise to consider and heed its inspired wisdom. Let us examine a few “pearls” from Proverbs on this important subject.

Do Not Trust in Yourself

Proverbs 28:26 states, “He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but he who walks wisely will be delivered” (NASB 95). In other words, we do not always know what is best for us. Our emotions should not serve as our compass. When mankind has relied solely on his own judgment, the world has often suffered. Today, millions of unborn babies are being murdered in the name of “healthcare” because people are trusting in themselves and doing what is right in their own eyes. This is an extreme example, but it began with many small choices to rely on human reasoning instead of God’s wisdom. When we place ultimate trust in ourselves, it does not end well.

Seek Much Counsel

Proverbs 11:14 teaches, “Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety” (NKJV). In many ways, knowledge is power. Seeking advice from people with different life experiences provides valuable insight and perspective that we may not have on our own. Before making important decisions, we should seek godly counsel. Listening to others can help us avoid unnecessary mistakes and guide us toward wise choices.

Trust in the Lord

Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight” (NASB 95). There is only One whom we can fully trust, knowing that He will never fail us. While we do not always know what is best, God does. When we seek counsel, we should follow advice that aligns with the principles found in Scripture. If we walk in God’s wisdom, He will guide our steps.

Trust can be difficult because when we rely on others, we are sometimes hurt. People are imperfect, and even those closest to us will disappoint us at times—just as we may disappoint them. However, trusting in the Lord is different. He will never let us down. If we filter our thoughts and the advice of others through God’s Word, we will learn who and what to trust. By placing our confidence in Him, seeking wise counsel, and refusing to rely solely on ourselves, we can walk safely and faithfully in His ways.
