Psalm 107:1 calls us to give thanks to God for His goodness, and how we need to do so! The goodness of God is a deep and enriching study. His goodness is associated with His mercy, His faithfulness, and His loving kindness. To say that God is good is to say that He is generous, and that He has the capacity and desire to give and provide in abundance, without any ulterior motive. We see His goodness on display in so many ways in Scripture and in our own lives. The past two articles have discussed some of these examples.
Consider, now, the benevolence extended to man in God’s grace, mercy, and longsuffering. He has provided for our redemption (Rom. 3:21-26), extended a means of fellowship (Eph. 2:13), blessed us with every spiritual blessing (Eph. 1:3), given us access into His throne room (Heb. 4:16), provided us with hope (Heb. 6:13-20), and so much more. As the Psalmist proclaimed, “His merciful kindness is great toward us” (Ps. 117:2)!
Finally, contemplate how the Lord provides our physical necessities (Matt. 6:19-34) and often, well beyond what is needed. David sang, “I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging bread” THIS MONTH’S ADMINISTRATING ELDER (Ps. 37:25). Indeed, such is still true!
